Architectural visualization predates computers. Hand-painted perspective drawings sold cathedrals, palaces, and skyscrapers for centuries before the first render.

Exterior, wide view of the woodland cabins

Luxury vacation cabins in the Cotswolds, a set of six exterior renders showing the timber architecture against the woodland landscape, designed to sit quietly in their setting.

Interior design and architecture by Juliana Giaffreda. The brief was a six-render exterior set, wide context views, gable details, the arrival sequence, and the al fresco dining moment that anchors the cabin's outdoor program.

The brief

A repeat commission, following The London Modern Villa earlier the same year. This time: luxury vacation cabins set in Cotswolds woodland, and a purely exterior set. Six renders were scoped to tell the site's story: wide context views placing the cabins in the landscape, the timber gable details, the driveway arrival sequence, and the al fresco dining moment.

Where the villa set had to sell interiors, this set had to sell a setting. The architecture was designed to sit quietly in the woodland, so the renders lead with landscape: lawn, tree line, and the way the cabins hold the clearing.

Software and pipeline

Built in Blender, 3ds Max, and SketchUp with Photoshop post-production, the same pipeline as the villa. Camera angles and lighting hours were locked at brief stage; framing signed off at block-out before materials and lighting.

Materials and lighting

Materials and detailing centred on the timber cladding, light-stained on the principal cabin, blackened on the secondary structure with garage. Timber is unforgiving in renders: too clean and it reads as plastic, too weathered and it stops matching the spec. Each render was built to read as a real photograph at print resolution, with lighting tuned hour-by-hour against the cabin's true orientation in the woodland.

The principal cabin render was matched to a warm late-afternoon hour to bring out the timber tones and the relationship between cabin, lawn, and tree line. The arrival sequence was composed to lead the eye from the driveway toward the entrance, with the surrounding woodland framing the architecture.
